The International ME Awareness Day aims to raise awareness of the devastating effects of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME or ME/CFS) on patients and their families around the world. This day sees patients, carers and friends organising activities to raise awareness of this neurological disease. The theme of this awareness day can vary between organisations. The members of the European ME Alliance (EMEA) are shown below with links to their campaigns or to their websites.

Theme: The new normal

In light of the pandemic and changes that have taken place around the world, this year's theme for the Awareness Month is "The new normal".

Patients with ME/CFS or fibromyalgia got their "new normal" the moment they got sick, a long before the term became globally popular. Their lives changed significantly and permanently overnight.

On the Facebook page of the Association there will be a post every day with a leaflet with a patient’s statement about what is normal for them due to the disease.

EMEA Serbia (the Association of People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Serbia), in cooperation with their local television station, is preparing a short film about the ME.
The 15 minutes film will be premiered during ME Awareness week. There will also be other activities being made in the media (television appearances, newspaper articles, Facebook page, website etc). More information: EMEA Serbia

ME AWARENESS MONTH SPAIN

Nowadays, the estimation of Myalgic Encephalomielitis patients in Spain is 0,2% of the general population [approx. 91,000 people]. However, unfortunately, there are no studies that confirm that number. In addition to that, it is believed that it is been underdiagnosed due to the lack of knowledge among healthcare professionals. That is the reason why every 12th of May, we celebrate the international day of Fibromyalgia, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and Electromagnetic Sensitivity.
For this year, 2021, EMEA Spain has prepared several events with raising awareness as the main goal.

Our main project is the virtual race (9th -12th) to raise funds for the investigation for the four diseases. But not only that, during the whole month CONFESQ will be celebrating the international day with three webinars (in Spanish) in which European friends can also participate by sending questions to the medical professionals and experts. The intention is to involve European patients by collecting and sharing information among all of us. Therefore, you can send your questions in English to any of the webinars to this email: internacional.confesq@gmail.com before 15th of May and we will make sure all the questions received from European patients gets an answer which will be published in EMEA’s newsletter.

ME AWARENESS MONTH SWEDEN

EMEA Sweden (the Swedish National Association for ME Patients) launches a new national ME-campaign with the hashtag #LEVAmedME which means #LIVEwithME.
The purpose is to share statistics about ME but also how it feels to be affected by the disease.
One part of the campaign is short videos, suitable for Instagram, with patients sharing about their lives, and the first video contains a trailer for some of the upcoming videos.
There are English subtitles also.

Our intent is to make change happen, to bring hope for people with ME and their families - and awareness is part of that process.

Yet publicity for its own sake is not an objective - and there is a vast difference between hope and hype.

ME Awareness Month has to include awareness of what is being done and what are the benefits of what we are trying to do

In this way we bring awareness of the actual issues that exist with ME.
The main theme is Research.
