EMEA Presenting at the 74th session of the World Health Organisation Committee for Europe

EMEA News for October 2024

In 2023 the European ME Alliance received ‘ official Non-State Actor accreditation’ status from WHO’s Regional Office for Europe during WHO Europe’s 73rd Regional Committee Meeting (RC73).
This status allows EMEA to participate in WHO Europe Regional Meetings and to make official statements on agenda topics of interest.
EMEA aims to use this platform to improve awareness, recognition, and action for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) across WHO Europe’s 53 member states.

In October, health ministers and high-level delegates from the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region, as well as representatives of partner organizations and civil society, will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe (#RCP74CPH).

EMEA will be presenting at the session and issuing statements concerning ME.
Our aim is to raise awareness with WHO and its Member States about ME and to call for a comprehensive and well-funded European strategy.

WHO Europe is also organising a meeting with Non-State Actors, such as EMEA, the day before the #RCP74CPH.
For this meeting, we submitted 5 short videos on the topic of why and how engagement with WHO Europe is meaningful to EMEA.

We shall be posting news about the statements that we deliver during the course of the meeting.

A Collaborative Approach to ME

EMEA will be joined by representatives from the European ME Research Group (EMERG) - and the associated European ME Clinicians Council (EMECC) - and Young EMERG (the young and early career researcher network formed with EMERG).
EMEA Denmark will be present to discuss ME in Denmark.
We are very pleased that Johanna Rohrhofer from Dr Eva Untersmayr's group in Vienna will be present at the congress as part of the EMEA team and representing Young EMERG.

EMEA/EMERG/Young EMERG Meeting with WHO Europe Director Dr Hans Kluge

Prior to #RCP74CPH EMEA met directly with Dr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, to discuss ME and EMEA's plans and strategy.
EMEA will also discuss collaborative projects with WHO.

At the meeting, arranged at EMEA's request, we demonstrated EMEA's work in creating collaborative environment between patients, researcher and clinicians.
EMEA was joined by Dr Jesper Mehlsen, representing the European ME Research Group (EMERG) and the associated European ME Clinicians Council (EMECC) - and Johanna represented Young EMERG (the young and early career researcher network formed with EMERG).
As the meeting was in Copenhagen then host EMEA Denmark was represented by Catherin Engsig.
